What is the Safe and Sound protocol?
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an innovative intervention designed to regulate the nervous system and improve social communication and emotional resilience. It is based on Dr. Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory and was developed by Dr. Stephen W. Porges and his team at the University of Illinois.
Who is it designed for?
The SSP is designed for people who have difficulty regulating their nervous system, such as those with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, anxiety disorders, depression, and trauma. Because we at BrainArts combine it with a comprehensive course based on Polyvagal Theory, it helps all our participants experience greater calm and a sense of safety.
How does it work?
The SSP protocol works by playing specially designed and filtered music that activates the vagus nerve, an important nerve involved in regulating heart rate, breathing, and digestion. It also retunes the eardrum in the middle ear, allowing us to perceive more sounds associated with safety.
How much does it cost?
We offer the SSP protocol free of charge as part of standard treatment, so that the treatment is even more effective and our clients receive long-term support. In addition, we also offer it alongside the course as a separate package For people who do not need treatment, or whose request for assistance is not covered by basic health insurance. In that case, we charge 250 euros for the treatment, counseling, and theoretical instruction.
Do I have to go to Utrecht for the SSP treatment?
We offer it Safe and Sound protocol at our practice in Utrecht. But we also offer it online so you can take it anywhere in the Netherlands or even outside the Netherlands.
