What is the SSP/Safe and Sound protocol?
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a therapy program designed to improve the processing of sensory information and reduce hypersensitivity to certain stimuli. The program uses music that has been processed to influence the body’s neural response, thereby helping to promote a state of calm and safety.
What is it based on?
The SSP was developed by Dr. Stephen Porges and is based on his Polyvagal Theory. The program is designed for people who struggle with anxiety, trauma, behavioral problems, social-emotional challenges, and other issues related to overstimulation of the nervous system. The SSP is suitable for both children and adults.
How does the therapy work?
The therapy is usually administered over a period of five days, during which the client listens to the adapted music for one hour each day. During these sessions, the client is placed in a quiet environment and assumes specific body postures to enhance the effects of the music. After the sessions, the client may experience improvements in the regulation of emotions, stress, and anxiety.
Is it safe?
The Safe and Sound protocol is a non-invasive, safe, and effective therapy that can help improve the quality of life for people who struggle with sensory processing issues and other related conditions.
