EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a form of psychotherapy developed to help people cope with emotional trauma. It is designed to help resolve the distressing material responsible for emotional problems. During an EMDR session, the therapist will ask the client to recall the distressing material while following her or his eyes with a finger or another object. The therapist will also ask the client to focus on other things, such as breathing or a mental image, while continuing to think about the distressing material. The theory behind EMDR is that eye movement helps process the distressing material in a different way, thereby reducing the emotional response to it. EMDR can be used as a supplement to other forms of treatment and can be effective in helping people cope with a wide range of emotional problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
